News 2004

After a cool start the town of Meningie heated up to a great SA Half Ironman race yesterday, the whole town came out to either watch or help out with the inaugural event. With the biggest field seen in a SA Half Ironman competing it was something to see. The two lap swim in Lake Albert, windy two lap cycle towards Narrung and three lap run alongside the lake made up the event.
In a sensational race Matthew Stephens won his fourth SA Half Ironman after a tough head to head battle on the run with Scott Green. Matt was in the lead pack of three out of the swim and lead the whole bike by himself. He lead off the bike by thirty seconds but Stephens was caught by Green quickly and from there the battle began, it wasn't until the last five kilometres that Matt managed to get Scott off his shoulder to win by just over a minute. In third place was Victoria's Darren Franken over eight minutes behind Scott. Age grouper Andrew Layden had the fourth fastest time of the day with Darren Pollock fifth over the line.
In the females Helen Roach lead out of the swim but was quickly caught by Susan Peter who had the fastest female bike and run splits to win by twelve minutes from Helen. In third was Matts wife Dani Stephens. Age grouper Joanne Parlevliet was fourth female with Louise Bower fifth over the line.
Thanks to all those who helped out, competed and watched the event.

If you know of anyone interested in doing a team (the run leg) I'd be interested in doing either the swim or bike or both. Basically I'm not running at the moment, but as I'm going to be down there wouldn't mind doing 2 of the three legs. So if you know a runner let me know!

Half IronMan Triathlon is back in SA

After a year long break the Southern Vales Triathlon Club is again holding the South Australian Half IronMan event, this time with a new location, new course and with new inspiration.

When: Sunday 24th October 2004

Where: Meningie, South East SA

The course differs greatly compared to the old location, and consists of a swim in Lake Albert, a flat open cycle course with minimal traffic and good roads and a run beside the lake and within the town limits. This should provide for some fast action packed racing with out the need for a ‘King of the Mountain’ category on the cycle and run legs.

This year the weekend will consist of the Meningie Half IronMan Triathlon on Sunday and a ‘Come and Try’ on the Saturday afternoon.

Accommodation is being booked at a rapid rate for this weekend and early bookings are vital. A variety of styles exist including caravan parks, hotels, motels and B&B’s.
